เดือนที่ผ่านมาทีมสัตวแพทย์ของเราได้สังเกตเห็นก้อนเนื้อบนขาหลังของ”วาสนา” ช้างตัวเมีย พวกเขาได้ทำการผ่าชิ้นเนื้อและส่งไปตรวจ ผลตรวจรายงานว่าเธอมี เนื้องอกชนิด malignant spindle cell tumor ซึ่งถ้าไม่ทำการเอาออก เนื้องอกจะใหญ่ขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และเริ่มลุกลามแพร่กระจายไปตามชิ้นส่วนสำคัญของร่างกาย
มูลนิธิเพื่อนสัตว์ป่าได้รับเกียรติจาก ผศ.น.สพ.ดร.วีรพงศ์ ตั้งจิตเจริญ ผู้อำนวยการโรงพยาบาลสัตว์ใหญ่มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่และทีม ผู้ให้คำปรึกษาและรักษาเนื้องอกให้กับวาสนา คุณหมอได้แนะนำกับเราว่าทางรักษาที่ดีที่สุดคือการจี้เย็น (Cryotherapy) ซึ่งเป็นการรักษาโดยการใช้ความเย็นไนโตรเจนเหลว (Liquid nitrogen) -79องศาจี้ที่ผิวหนังเพื่อทำลายเนื้อมะเร็งและเราจำเป็นต้องทำทุกๆ 2อาทิตย์จนกว่าแผลจะหาย

Over the last month the WFFT Vet Team noticed a mass on Wassana’s right hind limb. They did a biopsy, and the results showed that she has a malignant spindle cell tumour that needed to be removed as soon as possible otherwise the cancer would continue to grow and spread into vital parts of the body.
Fortunately, WFFT was honoured to have Asst.Prof.Dr. Weerapongse Tangjitjaroen the Director of the Large Animal Hospital at Chiang Mai University and his team who came to assess treatment options. The doctor suggested the best treatment would be to perform cryotherapy, using liquid nitrogen at -79C pressure on the skin to kill the tumour cell. With this treatment, she will be able to recover at a faster rate; Wassana will receive the treatment every two weeks until the tumour is gone.
