JUM NONG จำนงค์
JUM NONG จำนงค์
Name meaning: Purpose
Arrival date: September 2018
Arrival age: 53 years
Rescue location: Pattaya
History: While our team was in Pattaya rescuing another elephant, named Boon Dee, they came across Jum Nong who was in urgent need of help. Her young mahout clearly did not have the experience to care for her; she had no shade or water, her sleeping area was filthy, and it was evident she could not digest her food properly. As well as being emaciated and covered in abscesses and wounds, our vet team quickly noticed her skin was crawling with lice. This would have prevented her from being able to rest properly.
We set up a fundraiser to secure Jum Nong’s freedom. Thanks to numerous donations from people all over the world, she now has a much brighter future. She was treated at our elephant hospital where she was sprayed with a special insecticide to kill the small parasites, and within a few days she had visibly improved. She now lives at Project 4 and doesn’t spend every waking moment scratching!
Characteristics: Jum Nong has limited eyesight and lots of orange depigmentation on her face. She is a dominant, sometimes grumpy elephant who prefers to explore her Project 4 home by herself.
